Theatre Productions
Productions are a significant part of school life at Star of the Sea College and occur each semester in Years 9 and 10 Drama, as well as each year in Years 11 and 12 VCE Theatre Studies. In addition to classroom drama productions, students can get involved with the whole-school production, which occurs every two years.
The whole-school production brings together all students as they explore the joy of performing. Productions at Star of the Sea College are known for their large ensembles. Students also have the opportunity to learn how to be a member of a crew, stage-manage and engage in the operation of sound and lights, and also assist in the design and fabrication of productions sets, props and costumes. Our most recent production of Disney’s High School Musical – On Stage! included a cast of 120 students with 20 crew members (all students) working backstage and front-of-house.
Productions are performed in the Patricia Carroll Auditorium. Previous performances include:
- High School Musical 2
- Mumma Mia!
- Disney’s High School Musical – On Stage!
- The Witches
- Little Shop of Horrors
- 42nd Street
Music Festival
Music Festival is a celebration of singing and dance and occurs annually in Term 1 at The Plenary, Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre. Run by multiple College Captains (House, Music, Dance, and Art and Design), it allows students to develop leadership and problem-solving skills in real-time as they design, choreograph, rehearse and present choral and dance performances for the school community.
While voluntary, Music Festival attracts over 90% of the student population and is an important event in school life, particularly for nurturing House and College pride. It is also significant in promoting a sense of belonging, community and support as students across all year levels work together to create high-energy and even higher-calibre performances for their audience.
Awards are given for:
- Best House Choir
- Best House Dance
- Best House Design
- Meredith Tahlia Award for student accompanist
- Overall winning House.
Drama Fest
Drama Fest occurs annually in the Patricia Carroll Auditorium and is an opportunity for students from Years 8, 9 and 10 to collaborate and devise a dramatic performance.
Year 10 students take the lead for the event, working with the College Drama Captain to devise, script, rehearse, direct and present plays around a given theme. Year 10 leaders are also responsible for the design of their performance, working with staff on sets, props, costumes, sound and lighting to bring to the stage an engaging performance for the college community to enjoy.
Presentation Evening Performance
Our celebration of all things Star of the Sea College takes place at Hamer Hall, Arts Centre Melbourne, in November each year. All faculties come together to showcase student achievement either through live performance, speech and drama, or audio-vision presentation.
The following year’s College Captains present their vision for the school and award the highly coveted title of House Cup winner. This event is a major highlight on the Star of the Sea College calendar.
